Common reasons include:
You’ll be given local anesthesia or sedation to numb the area, so you won’t feel pain during the procedure. Some discomfort and swelling are normal afterward, but pain is usually manageable with prescribed or over-the-counter medication.
Initial healing takes about 1–2 weeks. However, most patients feel significantly better within 2–3 days. Complete healing of the bone and soft tissue can take a few months depending on the complexity of the extraction.
A dry socket occurs when the blood clot at the extraction site is dislodged, exposing the bone, which subsequently becomes inflamed and slows the healing process. This can be very painful but is not usually caused by infection. Prevent it by:
